The Charleston was originally danced by African Americas in as early as 1903. However the flappers and speakeasies were the ones that made it popular in the 1920s. Sometimes the dance was performed in what was called Jam Circle. The competitors would form a line or circle and take turns dancing. The dance was also performed with partners and solos. The dance was performed by swaying the arms and moving your feet quickly. The Flappers received their name from this dance because they seemed to be flapping around their arms.
